Involuntary vs Voluntary Churn: What's Really Draining Your Subscriptions
When subscribers leave, most owners lump it all together as "churn." But there are two very different kinds — and they need completely different fixes. Knowing which one is hurting you most is the first step to stopping it.
Voluntary churn: they chose to leave
Voluntary churn is when a member actively cancels. They decided — for a reason good or bad — that they no longer want to pay.
Common causes:
- Low usage / drifting away
- A temporary life reason (travel, injury, a busy month)
- Price feels high relative to value
- A specific frustration
How to reduce it: reinforce value between renewals, offer a pause option instead of a hard cancel, add a short save step at cancellation, and send win-back messages to those who still leave.
Involuntary churn: the payment failed
Involuntary churn is when a member leaves without meaning to — their renewal payment failed. An expired card, insufficient funds, or a bank decline ends the subscription silently.
Here's the striking part: involuntary churn is often 20–40% of all churn, and those members still want your service. They're the easiest to win back, because there was never a decision to leave.
How to reduce it: detect failed renewals immediately, email the member a clear prompt to update their card, and retry over a short window.
Why the distinction matters
Imagine two businesses, both losing 6% of members a month:
- Business A's churn is mostly voluntary — a product or value problem to solve.
- Business B's churn is mostly involuntary — a payment problem, fixable this week with a recovery email.
Same headline number, totally different action. If you don't separate the two, you might pour effort into retention campaigns when the real leak is just failed cards — or vice versa.
Start by measuring both
You can't fix what you can't see. Track your churn and split it: how much is members cancelling, versus payments failing? Wix doesn't break this out for you by default, so most owners never know their mix.
Retainly surfaces it for Wix Pricing Plans — a dashboard showing churn and revenue at risk, plus the tools to act on each: automatic failed-payment recovery for involuntary churn, and a pause-instead-of-cancel save flow and win-back messages for voluntary churn. Free to start on the Wix App Market.
Tackle the involuntary churn first — it's the fastest money you'll ever recover, because those customers never wanted to leave.
Keep the subscription revenue you already earned
Retainly connects to your Wix Pricing Plans to recover failed payments, win back cancellations, and show churn & MRR at a glance. Free to start.
